Justice for Emaan: Mayor welcomes sentencing of accused

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has welcomed the Western Cape High Court’s sentencing of the two killers and gang members responsible for the tragic murder of seven-year-old Emaan Solomons, who was gunned down in gang crossfire while playing in her street in Ocean View in February 2020. Sentences of 35 years without parole were handed to each of the two killers by the court on 2 May. This follows the court’s earlier guilty verdict for Emaan’s tragic murder, the attempted murder of four others, as well as possession of illegal firearms.
‘I welcome the 35-year sentences without parole for the gangsters responsible for the brutal killing of little Emaan. The court has sent a warning to gangsters that jail without parole awaits those who terrorise our communities. I am relieved that Emaan’s family are getting some measure of justice out of this trial, knowing also that no amount of jail time can bring back Emaan. It has been an honour to support the family at court during key moments of this trial and to take inspiration from their strength and generosity of spirit.
‘On behalf of the City we send our best wishes to the family, and reaffirm our promise to them and the community of Ocean View: our officers will keep working every day to take more illegal guns and drugs off our streets together with SAPS. We will also keep pushing for more policing powers so our officers can take their crime prevention role a step further and build prosecution-ready case dockets to gain convictions for gang, gun, and drug crime,’ said Mayor Hill-Lewis.
Mayor Hill-Lewis said Ocean View, and every ward in the metro, will soon benefit from a new deployment of an additional 700 municipal police officers. These officers will be allocated to each ward as dedicated neighbourhood safety resources in addition to the City’s existing policing deployments around Cape Town.
